Meter Box Maintenance
Rainbow Water records monthly meter readings electronically through an antenna connected to the customer's meter box. The meter boxes are located on an easement at the customer's property to allow Rainbow Water team members access to inspect, read, and maintain service. The meter box protects the water meter from damage, and you can help maintain it by following the tips below.
Keep Clear
Meter boxes are positioned in the ground near a curb or street and can be grouped with other meters in the area. A small letter "W" is carved into the curb to indicate the meter location in residential neighborhoods. Once you have found your meter box, it is important to keep the area clear of debris to allow staff to access in the event of
- Maintenance: Keep the meter box clean by sweeping off leaves and removing any excess dirt or mud that may have accumulated inside. Avoid stepping or placing items on the box.
- Plantings: Avoid planting shrubs or trees within three feet of the meter box and keep all ground cover at least six inches from the box.
- Insects & Animals: Exercise caution when opening a meter box to avoid contact with animals or insects hiding in the box. Contact Customer Service if you need assistance with locating a meter or to report damage.
Check the Valve
In an emergency the meter can be turned off at the ball valve located above the meter device.
- Routine Check: To ensure the valve is in working order, occasional change the valve from the on to off position. Turn the water back on slowly to avoid pressure or pipe damage.
